Whoa guys. Long time no see.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Don't mind the complete mess going on in these pictures. Really. I was so excited to finish this baby quilt (giant baby quilt) for a dear friend of mine. They don't know the gender yet, so I was going neutral. I really love how it turned out. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRksR1xDKJq8aOHF3SYE2F15gS_P0pkrrz456DjSix7uglQZTi_Y1hkGu2pmSErVtEHqUq5iN1P3zfUEVZTEOEbZrTb6E45rGdqCbkshvp26AyVI-g-fELaPeY-3BZQmwGMb_3aS300CY/s1600/20160313_122548-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRksR1xDKJq8aOHF3SYE2F15gS_P0pkrrz456DjSix7uglQZTi_Y1hkGu2pmSErVtEHqUq5iN1P3zfUEVZTEOEbZrTb6E45rGdqCbkshvp26AyVI-g-fELaPeY-3BZQmwGMb_3aS300CY/s320/20160313_122548-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the Fireworks pattern out of the book Strip Savvy which has a lot of cute jelly roll quilts. For the fabrics I used a Basic Mixologie by Studio M for Moda jelly roll. The colors are really vibrant. The mother to be gave me yellow as a suggestion for colors... I guess this is my interpretation of yellow. I enjoyed making this quilt especially, because my friend and I were running several years ago when she mentioned she had gone to a sewing boot camp class at Sew Crafty and loved it. I had been Internet stalking the place for about a year, and she gave me the push I needed to try sewing. Since then it has become one of my favorite hobbies. In return for her encouragement to try sewing, I have since gotten to sew a project for their wedding, and now for their first baby. I love that.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBOcESmBx4-yeaZlAJyozwjDWdmVB0JwTk0RCaDvS0jkDP1asUPpiCanqPgtsOceDYyLFyPunL-rJ7S1m7XHcIAcnKO71RgYDkM6B9zKZ48DRfItV3hYpy9lDABjbPU19i7HOZ7YSkIWM/s1600/20160313_122417-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="193" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBOcESmBx4-yeaZlAJyozwjDWdmVB0JwTk0RCaDvS0jkDP1asUPpiCanqPgtsOceDYyLFyPunL-rJ7S1m7XHcIAcnKO71RgYDkM6B9zKZ48DRfItV3hYpy9lDABjbPU19i7HOZ7YSkIWM/s320/20160313_122417-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the back I used some extra scraps and a great fabric we found at Joann's. When I saw the deer fabric it was the perfect color, but I thought it may be too feminine. Then Mr. Thinks He Can saw it and said it was for boys. That sealed the deal, and it became the perfect fabric for the back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I digress here, but I found out my friend was waiting to see the quilt to decide on bedding for the rest of the nursery. I was so honored, and then freaked out under the pressure. I dreamed she came over, hated the quilt. I told her I could make a new one and she looked at me, said "That would probably be best." Then turned and left the room. I stayed in my room and cried the rest of the visit. Needless to say after I told her about my nightmare she told me that was 100% not going to happen in real life. When she opened the quilt she remained true to her word, and genuinely seemed to love it. I was sick with anticipation while she was opening other gifts though! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was my first time making a tag for a quilt. I just used permanent marker and a charm square folded in half and sewed it in with the binding. I like that it is in my handwriting, and it could be used to hang the quilt from a hook. For the binding I went with another fabric from Joann's. It is navy with white arrows. I went with a dark binding because I hope this quilt gets dragged around quite a bit. I also machine bound it because hopefully it gets dragged everywhere and will need to stand up to a lot of washes!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course my assistant oversaw the whole thing. Yes, there are four quilts in this picture. I only made three of them! She is doing well, and has been great for helping me get out of the house as well as cuddles. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course I had to include an updated Ashton shot. She watched me make a lot of this quilt, and seemed to like the colors as they were being put together. Hopefully she and the new baby will be good friends one day. </div>

Ashton Olivia was born on October 6 at 6:27 a.m. She weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and has been a dream to bring home. I'm sure she will be making appearances here in the future, but in the meantime there may not be a lot of sewing going on for a little bit as we get to know each other better!</div>

I made the free <a href="http://myquiltinfatuation.blogspot.com/2014/09/strip-tango-baby-for-fwfs.html" target="_blank">Strip Tango</a> quilt as a baby quilt for a friend of mine.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In theory it was a quick and easy quilt to make, except I always trip myself up on easy stuff and wound up having to order more fabric from cutting it wrong and having to delay the work. Once I finally got it cut out correctly, it was a pretty easy sew.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY1mteAVDw5hxy9QievRuJy_h4gL4mzR-7pTa-PYDbMUkRvaAj1dNsTnAhxNVj555jb2JiurP6zJiNubbmejMHrCED3NmZ8jM9n5uO2n1TtGTgKJts6PWikqHmHR6CWlMYmTNYHlp7HsI/s1600/20150908_174150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY1mteAVDw5hxy9QievRuJy_h4gL4mzR-7pTa-PYDbMUkRvaAj1dNsTnAhxNVj555jb2JiurP6zJiNubbmejMHrCED3NmZ8jM9n5uO2n1TtGTgKJts6PWikqHmHR6CWlMYmTNYHlp7HsI/s320/20150908_174150.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used fat quarters from <a href="http://www.southernfabric.com/Fantasia-Crepuscular-Collection.html" target="_blank">Fantasia Crepuscular by Sara Lawson for Art Gallery</a>. The binding was a pretty orange with tiny white arrows I found at Joann. It was a very nice quality. You may be able to make out a 5" grid pattern I made in blue to quilt it all together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuVpMIEyGFE5gJlWjDELtfOl7F_k0CHZpfDPLK3EBgGqc9YiB-33IdM3YJo_B-4bpVNh4bZTXHSFKAZvf_qYnqNdhD2IerzBqPw05-uAuw4t-edYHjaCsMj9wfqGSV5by5QSzS7sLDA08/s1600/20150908_174231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuVpMIEyGFE5gJlWjDELtfOl7F_k0CHZpfDPLK3EBgGqc9YiB-33IdM3YJo_B-4bpVNh4bZTXHSFKAZvf_qYnqNdhD2IerzBqPw05-uAuw4t-edYHjaCsMj9wfqGSV5by5QSzS7sLDA08/s320/20150908_174231.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a nice bright blue and pieced together all the fabrics I screwed up to create a backing. I actually really like how the back turned out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This pattern was great, the only problems I had were me being careless. It would be a nice quilt for a beginner. I may make a few quilts to put on Etsy, and see how I do. I love making them, but at some point you really don't need anymore quilts. Your friends probably don't either come to think of it! I'll keep you posted on that.</div>

I did send this quilt off to a quilter with a long arm to be professionally quilted. I am really pleased with the results and it turned out much better than I could have done on my machine. Especially with a quilt this size. It is about a queen sized quilt.</div>

The backing fabric as well as the binding is plain navy blue, and the quilting thread is white. It really turned out lovely and will soon be hanging on the wall of the new nursery. </div>

This snap of just the top makes it a bit easier to see the fabrics and colors. Don't mind my mess in the background! Now can I eek out another cardigan before I go back to work Monday?</div>

I am heading back to school, pending my last Hail Mary stint of buying lotto tickets doesn't work out, in the next couple of weeks. In Houston we return in late August which may be Fall in some parts of the world, but Fall around here doesn't really hit until November. Working in education, I cannot just wear sun dresses and tank tops to work, so I made the <a href="http://www.welcometothemousehouse.com/product/julia-womens-cardigan" target="_blank">Julia Cardigan</a> in a short sleeve version to get me through.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiMVo9cA7U_KqN-BgirSRUUDqTXtiHrYwSkQCTCY2Gj3rY5jsFqhE85SWKvU_C78h64OOWbsYz9fTU9kGLm821DLL3681S-jWYrCBjH1pP46quifCqcV522Cklguok9vUxcCec_yyDFJw/s1600/20150730_102657.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiMVo9cA7U_KqN-BgirSRUUDqTXtiHrYwSkQCTCY2Gj3rY5jsFqhE85SWKvU_C78h64OOWbsYz9fTU9kGLm821DLL3681S-jWYrCBjH1pP46quifCqcV522Cklguok9vUxcCec_yyDFJw/s320/20150730_102657.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern comes in cap sleeve, 3/4 sleeve and long sleeve versions. I think it will help me transition back to work well, while still allowing me to be back in a sun dress as soon as I hit the parking lot. The cardigan has no closures which is perfect for what I needed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It also has a nice length in back. I could wear that with some skinny jeans with enough coverage on my bum to feel ok. I did do a doubled over collar, which gave it a professional look instead of hemming it. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The collar is actually a big loop that goes around the neck down the front and across the back. The instructions are easy and the whole project took about two hours. I think I may also make this in grey and leopard too. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The only changes I made to the directions was being very liberal with my use of dog hair, which I believe enhances any garment, and I added clear elastic to the shoulder seams. It's just a habit at this point. I highly recommend this great project to anyone!</div>

I'm recovering a glider I got on Criagslist. I'm painting it white and changing from brown nasty fabric to fully washable/removable covers from cotton + steel's states fabric in a home decor linen weight. Please ignore the weird junk in all the pictures, we're still recovering from the ceiling falling in!</div>

I;m also working on a Swoon quilt. It is pretty advanced compared to my usual quilts. This block is 2 feet by 2 feet and took me 3 hours to make! It has 73 pieces. I have two done and seven more to go! It will be beautiful when it is done, but it's a lot of work!</div>

Beyond that I am enjoying being a lady that lunches during my summer. I get to hang out with friends, play in the pool and visit the YMCA all that I want. I love summers! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been working on this quilt for awhile and it has taken forever. I'll get to that in a bit. First though, I need some help. I need to choose a color to go around the large middle part between the outside rows. I don't know what to go with. </div>

There are some bits of navy in the fabric, so I thought about that. I just don't know. Your opinions are very appreciated.</div>

Third, the weather has been really nice to go to the beach, and we've been taking advantage of that. A lot!</div>

Fourth, we've started a couple gardens. Yes, that poison oak I planted on the fence is doing even better than the vegetables, but what can I say? I have a green thumb like that.</div>

Fifth, I have been hanging out with my cousin. We did a five mile race in April then last weekend we went and saw Britney Spears perform in Las Vegas. I love a good girl's weekend!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that the ceiling is back in place, and school is about to be out for summer I should get more time. Don't forget I need color suggestions first, so I can finish this one. Thanks for sticking with me during my hiatus!</div>

It has been awhile. When it gets dark early I struggle to get pictures taken, and I've mostly just been hemming pants or making things you have seen a million times. I love this quilt I just finished for one of my best friends who is pregnant though. She is creating a gender neutral yellow and grey nursery. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt is from the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Simplify-Camille-Roskelley-Pre-Cut-Quarters-ebook/dp/B005NHYYDE/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1427055784&sr=1-1&keywords=simplify+camille" target="_blank">Simplify by Camille Roskelley</a> of Bonnie and Camille fame. It uses a charm pack and a bit of yardage for background and borders. It came together easily, and I think turned out just perfect. I did widen my borders to make the quilt 43"x 43".</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The charm pack I used was Gray Matters by Jacqueline Savage McFee. I love using precuts because they always match, and I get a little bit of a whole line of fabric I really like. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pillow used the same block pattern as the quilt and I just tagged some borders on it to make it the proper size. Hopefully she can use it, because I think it is super cute!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The back of the quilt and pillow were made from a perfect fabric I found at Joann Fabrics That was gray and yellow with little birds on it. You can barely see it, but I put a pocket a long the top of the quilt in case she would like to hang the quilt. The dark gray is leftover binding fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More projects soon. Now that we've had the time change and it finally quit raining, you should see some real projects from me! Happy Spring.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It has been awhile. Some sewing has gone on that I never got to, but I was so excited about this shirt I had to come tell you guys immediately. I just finished a button down shirt made from <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-11762-misses-button-front-shirts.aspx" target="_blank">New Look 6266.</a> I was so inspired by all the Archers last year that I really wanted to make a button down shirt. I knew I had a ton of button down patterns I have never even tried though. I have to say I am pretty pleased with this one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This shirt has a boxy, loose fit, and that is exactly what I wanted. I tend to wear this style shirt a lot instead of a T-shirt when the weather is hot, but I want to look dressier. I like the curved hem.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The shirt also has side vents which are cute and functional since this shirt is a bit longer.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, I completed a collar stand. It is not perfect, but I am very pleased with it. I watched a few tutorials online, but the directions included in the pattern were excellent. I also like the cute yoke on the front of this shirt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a yoke in the back as well. This shirt would look cute with lace front and back yokes. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This shirt was a big win. I used a double gauze I ordered from Mood with a gift card. It is sheer, but great to work with. I ordered quite a bit to use my gift card, and chose quite a few wovens. I have worked with knits more lately because they are so easy to sew and fit. I really enjoyed all the technical aspects of this shirt though and look forward to using the rest of my fabrics. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As an update if anyone is interested, the quilt show this year was awesome. I bought several fat quarters and a few notions. I have been lining up all the fat quarters and rearranging them. I have no idea what quilt to make. Also, I didn't plan it this way, but when I got home I realized all the fat quarters I got were the same colors even though they were from several booths. Kind of cool!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Is anyone going to the International Quilt Festival here in Houston at the George R. Brown in a couple weekends? Maybe we could meet up. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a <a href="http://kitschycoo.bigcartel.com/product/the-trifecta-top-sewing-pattern-for-teens-and-women" target="_blank">Trifecta Top</a>. All I can say is I love this shirt. I used a Robert Kaufman Laguna stretch knit from <a href="http://fabric.com/">Fabric.com</a>, and it is perfectly slouchy and comfortable. I made the 3/4 sleeve version with low scoop and inset.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhLlzG9PRl40zk50CQ3DY11pxXH-CEw9GuFhe-g9Sd5HIhlTuU_0y1Ct3_gbLXrHOFUoSleuy4ojlxS685VXWfmkaKCtKKRmsK1M0jgUisDNrCc_eJC7mQvOGrj7liKtPbepMOR51Gf20/s1600/20141013_162553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhLlzG9PRl40zk50CQ3DY11pxXH-CEw9GuFhe-g9Sd5HIhlTuU_0y1Ct3_gbLXrHOFUoSleuy4ojlxS685VXWfmkaKCtKKRmsK1M0jgUisDNrCc_eJC7mQvOGrj7liKtPbepMOR51Gf20/s1600/20141013_162553.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Check out my inset. Yes, it is faux leather. I think I am such a rock star with my fake leather t-shirt. The faux leather is actually a <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/0362358/roxanne-faux-leather-knit-black" target="_blank">leather knit from fabric.com</a> as well I got to use as a trim on a dress I have in my head. I ran it through the washer and dryer and it held up great. I wanted to use a smidge for this inset. I really do think I'm cool.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The shirt has raglan sleeves and is just a bit fitted. My fabric was pretty substantial, so it doesn't have much stretch. I think with a drapey, thin fabric it would look totally different.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was pretty lazy on the hem and just serged them all and left them. I think it adds to the look of the shirt. Like I said, I feel way too cool to be bothered hemming a shirt.</div>

More wishful sewing, but I made <a href="http://www.staciethinksshecan.com/2014/06/lady-skater-and-recap-of-all-stuff-i.html" target="_blank">another</a> <a href="http://kitschycoo.bigcartel.com/product/the-lady-skater-sewing-pattern-for-teens-and-women" target="_blank">Lady Skater</a>. This time I used long sleeves and shortened the bodice a half inch. The print is a little much and the knit is not the best quality. One of those "If I just spend eight more dollars I get free shipping" purchases. I think it made a great Lady Skater though. I figured if I'm going to use a bold print I better own it and wear it all over. I love it and have already worn it to work with quite a few compliments.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here it is without the belt. It looks fine, the belt just breaks it up a bit. The waist seam is reinforced with clear elastic which I think is genius. Can I tell you, this dress is so comfortable. It is like wearing a T-shirt and no pants. How much better can it get? I love knit dresses, especially long sleeved ones.</div>

I bought this thin knit just for <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6844-products-47791.php?page_id=115" target="_blank">McCalls 6844</a> last year when it was cool, but neglected to sew it up until the summer. Again, I am sewing for hope in the summer heat. Luckily my office is kept at roughly 9 degrees above freezing, so I am getting to wear some of my winter wear. Public Officials: I bet if you turned the AC up in public schools all us teachy types could probably get a raise and enough left over for ipads for all students. Yes, it's that cold. I digress, back to the sew.</div>

Overall I would call this one a win. I would also like to make it in a fleece or sweatshirt material. I got several compliments at work on it. On the other hand all Mr. Thinks He Can will say is that it doesn;t look like my typical style. I agree, but it's fun.</div>

See, I have been sewing. However, in Houston it is 100 degrees (F) and 100% humidity, so I have been locked in the air conditioning sewing winter clothes. It's like some sort of sick sewing rain dance that doesn't work and leaves me with a closet full of clothes it is too hot to wear! On to business though - I love this dress. I used <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-6279-misses-dresses-cynthia-rowley-collection.aspx" target="_blank">Simplicity 2054</a>, view A. The whole dress and cowl came together in just a couple hours.</div>

The cowl is pleated and is pretty cool. I didn't know if I would like it at all, but the way it is drafted is pretty clever. The cowl itself would make some pretty snazzy presents.</div>

LOL, this is Mr. Thinks He's Can. Seconds before this he was whining because lightening was going to strike us, hey storms cool it down around here and you have to take advantage. Then I was all, that scarf looks good on you, let's take a selfie. No more whining about lightening! To his credit there was pretty bad lightening and as soon as we got back in it began to pour. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The dress can be worn without the cowl. Without the cowl I added a belt to give it a little shape. It really is just kind of a big t-shirt when worn without the cowl. I also made it a bit shorter that I usually do, but I figured in the winter I would wear it with leggings.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the real situation. There is a pool and it is hot as heck. Immediately after this I had to take the dress off because I was going to die from heat stroke. Hopefully I can wear it next month. For the fabric I used <a href="http://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/Black-Heathered-Gray-Striped-Sweater-Knit-56W.html" target="_blank">this one from Fabric Mart.</a> It is soft an lightweight without being sheer. Also, there is no itch factor at all. I totally recommend it. I would like a cardigan in it, so I may be ordering more.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm all about the basics right now. I just went back to work after a whirlwind summer. I have been sewing, but let's be honest when I don't work I have no need to put on make up, brush my hair...shower... Yes, I go into feral teacher mode. But my hair is cut, my shoes are back on, overall I am falling into place visually. It is time to catch up on blog posts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I have worn this skirt at least once a week since I made it. It is a light weight stretch denim <a href="http://sewingcake.com/0289-hbird/" target="_blank">Hummingbird</a>. It is so comfortable and looks like a pencil skirt when paired with a blouse or just a dang cute skirt when paired with a T-shirt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a gold button in my stash that I loved for this skirt. Oh yeah, I make button holes now. I love that new machine! It even sewed the button on for me. LOVE, guys. I did a lapped zipper as that is my preferred zipper.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't get enough of these pockets. They are absolutely brilliant. They lay flat and don't add bulk even when they are full of chap-sticks and cell phones.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I great basic. I did add a couple inches to the length as I wanted it to be work appropriate. Also I had to take in the sides a bit due to the stretch in the denim, but this is a TNT pattern for me. I totally recommend it!</div>

I'm sure if you're in Houston, you know <a href="http://rhondabuss.blogspot.com/2014/07/im-coming-to-houston-how-about.html" target="_blank">Rhonda from Rhonda's Creative Life is coming to town</a>. However, if I missed it because you didn't know, I'd feel so bad. So I am reposting the plan, but go to <a href="http://rhondabuss.blogspot.com/2014/07/im-coming-to-houston-how-about.html" target="_blank">Rhonda's site </a>to e-mail and RSVP. Well dang guys, why did it take me so long to make a <a href="http://kitschycoo.bigcartel.com/product/the-lady-skater-sewing-pattern-for-teens-and-women" target="_blank">Lady Skater</a>? OK, well I didn't think it would be flattering on me, but I think it really is. It is also great for summer because it is too hot to wear many clothes here in Houston.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got this fabric at a fabric store with no notable name on 30th street in Playa del Carmen, Mexico as seen above. It is a really soft and light weight rayon. We went there for vacation, but I could not resist seeing a Mexican fabric store. I got some great swimsuit fabric, so expect to see some swimsuit action soon. I think the fabrics were comparable in cost to what you see in the States for the most part, but the selection was huge.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back to the Lady Skater, it was a quick sew. I think next time I make it I may shorten the bodice about a half inch, but other than that the fit was great.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used my twin needle on the neck, sleeves and hem. Like that tan line there? In Mexico people kept assuming I was Canadian because I was pale. What can I say, SPF is important to me.</div>

Overall a great pattern and an easy make. I used the serger a lot, but have been using my sewing machine for knits more often lately and think it could be easily done that way as well.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a ponte pencil skirt, which are popular right now due to an indie designer, but mine is from <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6654-products-29596.php?page_id=96" target="_blank">McCalls 6654</a>. I used about a yard of fabric,and I literally made it during one episode of The Vampire Diaries from cutting the pattern to the hem!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
It is three pieces: front, back,waistband. It comes in a pencil or flare and has multiple lengths. I went with the second shortest in the pencil silhouette. The waistband is shown here. Elastic is run through it, so no closures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9VCMQsdQ3WKdkP9epMZOx_mFRf08PrY0FkLCnQRgwLFTdIrp6uMmSBg7P7VT3eUZoDuzsjTnLQ97-ldnKa1SW-FEGqiKJfed18kKiWv95gIyAx6dJcxPT1DEYQkSCO2c6VRolSVxqQmE/s1600/20140504_184313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9VCMQsdQ3WKdkP9epMZOx_mFRf08PrY0FkLCnQRgwLFTdIrp6uMmSBg7P7VT3eUZoDuzsjTnLQ97-ldnKa1SW-FEGqiKJfed18kKiWv95gIyAx6dJcxPT1DEYQkSCO2c6VRolSVxqQmE/s1600/20140504_184313.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also did a double needle hem. My new machine (Brother PRW-420) has a special double needle setting that I have to say is amazing. I get stretch in this hem like you would with a RTW cover stitched hem. This is such a win. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I have two more skirts just the same lined up. I wore the one above to work today and it felt like pajamas. Also, a shout out to <a href="http://fabricmart.com/">Fabricmart.com</a>, I ordered one yard of each of these and they sent me 1.75 yards. I may have enough for a pieced together shirt (<a href="http://kitschycoo.bigcartel.com/product/the-trifecta-top-sewing-pattern-for-teens-and-women" target="_blank">trifecta top</a>?) It may have been a accident, but thanks guys!</div>

This is a double knit I bought because I loved the print, but didn't know what to make. I wanted a simple pattern because I had never worked with this material before. My dear friend <a href="http://stitchinjenny.com/" target="_blank">Jenny</a> gave me a box of patterns, and when I spotted this one I knew it was perfect. Then I pulled out the pattern and realized it had been cut in a very Jenny size. To give a brief rundown on Jenny she looks like a young Elizabeth Taylor with an perfectly itty-bitty waist. That's quite the opposite of me. I decided to go for it anyway. I made my seams a little smaller and with the stretch in the material it worked out great! This was also my first time working with princess seams. I liked it.</div>

The hem has a cute little slit on the left and is finished with scalloped stretch lace. I have to admit this was my first time to work with this lace, and it was a bit of a fight. By the time I got to the bottom I started caring less and just going with it, and it actually worked out really well. I guess my advice would be don't over think it, it will look fine.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My straps were a cheat. I didn't have black elastic for them, and I didn't want to use navy blue. Then I realized I had just cleaned out a bunch of clothes to go to Goodwill, and took a black bra out and cut the straps off. Gertie's instructions were fine, but I saved a buck and recycled. I did move the back straps in toward the center about 2.5 inches each because I did not like where the pattern placed them. It was kind of under my arm pit and felt funny as it was. This made the fit perfect! There will be more slips. I ran out of lace, so I haven't tried the undies yet. I will as soon as I find more!</div>

Those of you that follow me on Instagram got a highly unflattering preview of a muslin I made of these. The fit was spot on. That fabric is a navy blue polyester I found at an estate sale for a dollar. I'm glad I made the muslin because I knew the fit was great, and I also discovered a few things I wanted to do differently on the good fabric.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got this fabric at Joann Fabrics. It is a black cotton with white embroidered flowers on it. Well, after I sewed in the lapped zipper and tried them on they were HUGE! I took in all the darts about two inches, the front and back center about 1.5 inches and had to take a little off the side seam with no zip. That is why my butt darts go way past my butt. Then I put on the waistband, which I had interfaced so it did not stretch at all, and realized my fabric had just stretched out that much. I hemmed them and then washed and dried them and they shrunk up a few inches in length and looked much better overall. We will see if they get super big with wear. So for now crisis averted. But, I'm glad I did the muslin first because I knew it would work, and it wasn't the pattern.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The changes I made to the pattern were mostly on the inside. I finished the edges of all of the pieces that had anything to do with pockets on main and lining pieces. I didn't have to, but I thought it made for cleaner insides. </div>

Here is my button I am so proud of. The thing is I suck at waistbands. So, you can see some of the lace tape I used on the inside on the outside. I don't tuck my shirts in and can live with it. There is a button hole there too that I am dang proud of because I swore them off years ago. Can an Archer be far behind? A Hawthorne? Ye Gods the possibilities!</div>

Never mind the stupid face, but overall this is a great pattern. I would even go as far as making a few more pairs for summer. I love this fabric, but I may go with something a bit more sturdy. I just like the dressy, lacy shorts look. I may make them a little shorter too. For real, it's going to be 1000 degrees with 110% humidity before I know it. Less clothes is better and now I have a TNT to play with!</div>

I like plain old woven tops.I wear them quite a bit, but since they are worn so much I don't have enough to always have clean ones on the ready and wind up wearing a lot of knit T-shirts. Woven tops just look so much nicer, so I am on a quest to find a TNT one.<br />
<br />
The contenders:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXF5cMUYpcKiHTYAYQy0zvoaT6vqkcu6XCMbeA2keCeExyzvmYr5ivzC5rG_CR8Ld2Yt1KmBtM4QmnjWnXWy3uf5UETG6elTuBMi31-ZJa0Vn9cZYJvyHbbwnq0HiPavZ59ySwrcgv394/s1600/S+vS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXF5cMUYpcKiHTYAYQy0zvoaT6vqkcu6XCMbeA2keCeExyzvmYr5ivzC5rG_CR8Ld2Yt1KmBtM4QmnjWnXWy3uf5UETG6elTuBMi31-ZJa0Vn9cZYJvyHbbwnq0HiPavZ59ySwrcgv394/s1600/S+vS.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First off I bought this voile awhile back, but never knew what I wanted to do with it. It's not a color I usually lean toward. When I decided to do this comparison I thought it would make a great wearable muslin fabric. It also makes me look at the shape of the shirt rather than liking one fabric more than the other. The downside was the pictures are hell to sort! Oh yeah, check out our plum tree we planted year ago that has never grown or produced even a single leaf. We thought it was dead, and now it is covered is delicious smelling flowers!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's start with <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-8461-misses-dress-skirt-top-leanne-marshall-collection.aspx#t-0" target="_blank">Simplicity 1690 by Leanne Marshall</a> You might recognize the structural shape of the skirt and dress on this pattern, but I bought it for the simple kimono sleeved shirt. I made french seams on this one since there were only four. I only spent about an hour working on it and it was done. No fuss, no muss! I can't say how well the directions are written because I just didn't read them. I may have missed something because on the envelope it looks like there are supposed to be slits on each side along the hemline. I will definitely add those next time. I made no adjustments or alterations for size.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The neckline is bias bound and hems are just folded and sewed.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back view is pretty standard stuff.I was told I need to make shorts that fit next since I am holding these up by the pockets. Apparently I have a droopy butt. Everyone is a critic!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now onto <a href="http://shop.grainlinestudio.com/product/scout-woven-tee" target="_blank">Grainline Studio's Scout Woven Tee</a>. This is exactly as described, a woven tee shirt and exactly what I was looking for. The pattern is a downloadable pdf. I did follow the directions (for the most part) and liked them.I worked on this one a few minutes a day here and there over a week. The main difference here is the scoop neckline and set in sleeves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The neck is again, bias bound, but the directions added a very new to me step of under stitching the binding to the seam allowance. I plan on doing this from now on because I love the way it looks. Hems are fold and sew.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Simplicity 1690!!!! I am as shocked as you are. I thought it was the Scout Tee, right up until I saw the photos. Then the Leanne Marshall showed to be so much more flattering. I have to admit it is an easier sew, but only because of the kimono sleeves. They are both great patterns, but I think Simplicity is closer to being my tried and true. I may try another couple patterns on my search though. </div>

BTW I got a $100 gift card to Mood for my birthday....any suggestions?</div>

I made my first <a href="http://www.salmesewingpatterns.com/collections/womens-patterns/products/digital-sewing-pattern-pussy-bow-dress" target="_blank">Salme pattern, the pussy bow dress</a>, and I am really impressed. The fabric I used was a voile I bought an abundance of when it was on a crazy sale at Fabricmart. I'm glad I did, it worked really well for this easy dress.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The bow part was a new technique for me, but it was well explained in the instructions. This was also a pdf pattern, which I don't do a lot of. And I cheated a bit, you are supposed to add seam allowances...this is a loose fitting dress with an elastic waist, so I just cut the next size up. I doubt it would work for something more fitted, but it was a cheap and easy fix for me on this one. I also added two inches to the skirt so I could make it to wear to work (and I totally did, polar vortex be damned) but I didn't need to. I'm 5'5" and the length would have been fine.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The sleeves were finished with bias binding, which is always a clean finish. This was a winning little project.</div>

I also got this in my email a couple days ago from Salme Sewing Patterns.<br />

This is what my machine was doing to the hem. It was <a href="http://www.staciethinksshecan.com/2014/01/machine-problem.html" target="_blank">tragic</a>. I got some great advice from you guys, but the machine could not be salvaged.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back to the robe, I used <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-8193-misses-knit-sleepwear.aspx" target="_blank">Simplicity 1720</a>. The sweatshirt knit I got was bought with a robe in mind as I wanted something warm I could dash around the house in while we had Mr. Thinks He Can's family staying with us for Christmas. I dashed around inappropriately instead which was much more exciting, so it worked out OK. I am glad to have a robe though.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Man, I got the crazy eyes! This lace was from an estate sale and as I began sewing it I realized it had been salvaged from another project at some point. You can see a couple strings hanging off of it where old fabric was still attached. I like the character it adds to the project.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0OznHuebswlCCDGXqsf0m_lGCUYFLfzLT2U5rHSGbzz_uY5iG4aXG-H5dxlsZ16BnUyaJwDWy2PLHBBZfGJTjl-ASTMJIy97EZSfgsD9MhDYgmlOIHuV_yjz3gttVkxFgiD16h39uvEg/s1600/20140209_105615.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0OznHuebswlCCDGXqsf0m_lGCUYFLfzLT2U5rHSGbzz_uY5iG4aXG-H5dxlsZ16BnUyaJwDWy2PLHBBZfGJTjl-ASTMJIy97EZSfgsD9MhDYgmlOIHuV_yjz3gttVkxFgiD16h39uvEg/s1600/20140209_105615.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also made a couple of simple rectangle pockets to stick on the front. What's a robe without pockets? I used the same lace across of both pockets.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs1H7KKqAWhAnW6Qt8ENjWQHfpoMtYsdg7UKkuaGZW7PiNPwvq8DjIA3ICwxUmNjYVvjMQruTEJJGuaTPMYBBjZkJNDGCwhl1GpaH979W1LHxLcWK_qdNASEID2fP3q2XKueamcXSe8O8/s1600/20140209_105645.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs1H7KKqAWhAnW6Qt8ENjWQHfpoMtYsdg7UKkuaGZW7PiNPwvq8DjIA3ICwxUmNjYVvjMQruTEJJGuaTPMYBBjZkJNDGCwhl1GpaH979W1LHxLcWK_qdNASEID2fP3q2XKueamcXSe8O8/s1600/20140209_105645.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another close up of the lace. I think it is very pretty and makes the robe a little more glamorous.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
An update on the <a href="http://www.staciethinksshecan.com/2014/01/new-machine.html" target="_blank">sewing machine situation</a>. I went with the Brother PC420 PRW after Judi gave such a glowing review of it. I have used the heck out of it so far and all I can say is wow. It is so quiet, and why didn't you guys tell me about how much technology can help in sewing? I am amazed. I love my automatic thread cutter button. Also, I didn't think I would ever use the automatic threader, but I'll be darned it actually works! Ooh, one more thing it has a lever that hangs out the bottom so you can lift our presser foot with your knee. I didn't know I needed that until I got used to it. Also, as I was hemming my robe when I would get to seams it went right over them with no fighting. I didn't realize I used to have to fight but as I got near them I would tense up and white knuckle the robe and get ready to yank. I didn't even know I did that. Anyway, I want to play on my machine a bit more before I give a full review, but I am very happy with it and thank you guys for talking me into it!</div>
